Because the brain processes social pain and physical pain using overlapping neural networks, this digital stress lowers their physical pain threshold.

4. Decreased Physical Play and "Guard Fatigue"

The shift away from unstructured, outdoor physical play toward sedentary, screen-based routines has altered how adolescent bodies process movement. Physical activity naturally teaches the nervous system that movement is safe. When movement decreases, the brain loses that data, making it more prone to misinterpreting normal joint or muscle sensations as "dangerous" or painful.
